Something to be aware of

The Birch Bay playground
The Birch Bay playground

Last Saturday morning, August 16th, half of a dead rabbit was found in the playground first thing in the morning. Normally, we would assume that coyotes or another predator animal in nature would have caused the rabbit’s demise but not this time.

The half of the rabbit that was found was the hind quarters, the “back half”.   Since our four legged neighbours lack the tools, skills, and inclination to dismember their prey this way before devouring it, that indicates that the rabbit was not killed by wildlife predators. As well, the small amount of blood found with the half carcass, and the absence of any part of the front half of the rabbit indicates that the rabbit died elsewhere.

Fortunately the rabbit was found and disposed of before any children came to the beach and saw it.  The thought that an individual could do such a thing to a rabbit in this way is disturbing. We all need to be aware of this incident so we can do anything possible to respond helpfully should we learn more about what happened to the rabbit, and take steps to prevent anything similar happening in the future
